Graphics in Santos / Grafismos em Santos

One day, walking down the sidewalk of the 15 de Novembro Street, in the historic center of Santos (no need to say it was a rainy day, as I´am talking about the same September 07 holiday, already mentioned here), Dani an I sought for something interesting to explore at the city center.

Um dia, andando pelo calçadão da Rua 15 de Novembro, no centro histórico de Santos (não preciso nem dizer que era um dia chuvoso, pois se trata do mesmo feriado de 07 de setembro já comentado por aqui), eu e Dani procurávamos por algo de interessante para explorar desta parte da cidade.

That beautiful historical architecture, of reform, partly in ruins, was the subject I wished to shoot above all at that moment, and because of that I had the hope some stroke of luck could bring up from the clouds some trace of light, to cast shadows on the sidewalk or the narrow cobblestone streets, where once walked the rich men who would do their business at the Exchange Coffee.

Aquela bela arquitetura antiga, parte em reforma, parte em ruínas, era o assunto que eu mais desejava fotografar naquele momento, então tinha a esperança de que algum golpe de sorte pudesse fazer surgir das nuvens algum traço de luz, para projetar sombras na calçada ou nas estreitas ruas de paralelepípedos, onde outrora caminharam os ricos homens que fariam seus negócios na Bolsa do Café.

But weather didn´t give us a chance, and for me the History would have to wait, until a sunny and shiny day rose. The gray sky did not interested me, not for my kind of photography.

Mas o tempo não cedia, e para mim a História teria que esperar, até que um dia mais iluminado surgisse, pois o céu cinza não me agradava, não para o meu estilo de foto.

So, turning the back to the Coffee Exchange (which was even closed on holiday!), I looked at the ground, and suddenly found the contrast, color, texture and movement that stimulated me to a produce a creative composition.

Então, dando as costas para a Bolsa (que estava inclusive fechada no feriado!), olhei para o chão e de repente encontrei o contraste, a cor, a textura e o movimento que me estimularam para uma composição criativa.

And as an alchemical maneuver, the same elements that had transformed that day almost lost, in an incredible journey of photos, reappeared to me on that same street, but then in a whole new way: The organic composition of the jagged rocks gave rise to the accuracy of straight lines, able to cut the up and down metal in one blow, and the incidental trace of ink spilled randomly on the floor, was converted into the precise, but indecipherable, signature of an unknown.

E, como numa manobra alquímica, os mesmos elementos que transformaram aquele dia quase perdido numa jornada incrível de fotos, reapareceram para mim naquela mesma rua numa forma totalmente nova: A composição orgânica das pedras irregulares deu lugar à precisão das linhas retas, capazes de cortar o metal de cima a baixo num único golpe, e o traço incidental da tinta derramada ao acaso sobre o piso, foi convertido na assinatura precisa, porém indecifrável, de um desconhecido.

Nocturne lights over Santos and São Vicente / Luzes noturnas sobre Santos e São Vicente

Continuing the serie of photos in the cities of Santos and São Vicente (read previous article), after capturing some foggy images from the top of José Menino´s hill, by the end of the day, my assistant and I decide to move to another observation deck, in order to capture the port and the city while it was shining with nocturne lights.

Continuando a série de fotos pelas cidades de Santos e São Vicente (leia artigo anterior), após capturar algumas imagens com neblina do topo do morro José Menino, eu e minha assistente decidimos nos dirigir, já ao final do dia, para outro mirante, para registrar o porto e a cidade ao brilho da iluminação noturna.  

So, the place choosen to register that special spectacle was the “Monte Serrat”, the second highest hill in Santos (157m). It offers a 360º breathtaking view and can be reached by a tram, or by a 416 stairway steps surrounded by little houses where local people live. An interesting itinerary, but, after have been spent the whole day photographing, we decided to took the fastest – and easist!! route: The tram! (one day we´ll do that other tour with our legs only, and then shot and write. Promisse 😉 )

Então, o lugar escolhido para capturar aquele espetáculo tão especial foi o Monte Serrat, o segundo mais alto morro de Santos, com 157 metros de altitude. O lugar oferece uma impressionante vista e pode ser alcançado de bonde, ou por uma escadaria com 416 degraus rodeada por casas onde a população local vive . Um itinerário interessante de se percorrer mas, após termos passado o dia inteiro fotografando, decidimos que iríamos tomar a rota mais rápida – e fácil!!: O bonde! (um dia faremos o outro tour usando nossas próprias pernas. Então fotografarei e escreverei a respeito. Prometo 🙂 )    

So this is the outlook´s view, facing the north side of Santos, with the Valongo´s port and the Barnabé Island in the background.

Esta é a vista do mirante, que dá para a parte norte de Santos, onde se situa o Porto Valongo, com a Ilha de Barnabé ao fundo.

And if you´re a photography enthusiast and are interested about the techinical details of the image, for this photo, I used a tripod and set the camera to ISO 100, f/4.5 for aperture and 1,6″ of shutter speed. Focal distance: 30mm on APS-C sensor (if you don´t know what this mean, please write me so I can help you!). But in few words: A long exposure configuration, used to register a scene with low light as is the case here.

E se você é um entusiasta da fotografia e está interessado nos detalhes técnicos da imagem, nesta foto, eu usei um tripé e ajustei a câmera para ISO 100, f/4.5 de abertura e 1,6″ de velocidade de obturador. Distância focal de 30mm em um sensor APS-C (se por acaso não sabe o que isso significa, por favor me escreva para que eu possa ajudá-lo!). Sintetizando: Uma configuração para longas exposições, usada para registrar cenas com baixa iluminação, como neste caso.

Following that, and in the moment the sun had set completely, I zoomed a little my lens to 56mm, so I could look closer to the scene, searching for another interesting composition, while looking through the camera´s viewfinder, and that´s what I saw.

Seguindo-se a este clique, no momento em que o sol já havia se posto completamente, aumentei um pouco o zoom de minha lente para 56mm, para poder olhar mais de perto a cena, buscando outra composição interessante, enquanto olhava pelo visor da câmera. E aqui está o que vi.

The longer focal distance permitted me to see the details of the buildings in first plane. One of them being the famous “Museu do Café” (The Coffee Museum – the classic tower, facing the sea, in first plane), was the center for the coffee business, on the first decades of the 20th century.

A distância focal mais longa me permitiu capturar os detalhes dos prédios em primeiro plano. Um deles o famoso Museu do Café (a torre arredondada que dá para o mar, em primeiro plano), era o centro dos negócios do café, nas primeiras décadas do século vinte.  

Again for technicals: Camera in tripod with ISO 100, f/11 for aperture and 15″ shutter speed. Focal distance 56mm.

Novamente para os técnicos: Câmera sobre tripé, com ISO 100, f/11 de abertura e 15″ de tempo de obturador.

Continuing to look for more to discover of that amazing “starry” nocturne landscape, I walked around the viewpoint and, looking through the camera´s viewfinder, I found somtehing interesting to explore about the place´s activities, like the ships being carried with containers, while some unexpected light trails, caused by occasional boats, suddenly appeared, linking the cranes like energy wires or floating over the long exposed “smoothed” colored sea.

Continuando a busca para descobrir mais daquela surpreendente paisagem “estrelada”, andei um pouco pelo mirante, olhando pelo visor da câmera e assim encontrei algo interessante das atividades do local para explorar, como os navios sendo carregados de containers, enquanto alguns rastros de luz inesperados dos barcos de repente apareceram, ligando os guindastes como fios de energia ou flutuando sobre o mar colorido e “alisado” pela longa exposição.

Finally, we left Monte Serrat to reach Ilha Porchat (Porchat Island), a place I had already photographed by far, from José Menino´s hill, in the middle of the fog (read the blog´s first article). But now, at the top of this place, we had the privilege to admire the view of two São Vicente beaches at the same time: Gonzaguinha and Itararé. A perfect end to our journey!

Finalmente, deixamos o Monte Serrat para irmos à Ilha Porchat, um lugar que eu já havia fotografado de longe, em meio à neblina e a partir do Morro do José Menino (leia o primeiro artigo do blog). Do alto deste lugar, tivemos o privilégio de admirar duas praias de São Vicente ao mesmo tempo: Gonzaguinha e Itararé. Um final perfeito para a nossa jornada!

Photographing Santos and São Vicente in a foggy day / Fotografar Santos e São Vicente num dia com neblina

Hi! This is my first post on my new blog! And you´re welcome to read it!

Olá, este é o meu primeiro post no meu novo blog! Seja bem-vindo, leitor!

I decided to begin it showing photos that I made in a short trip with my assistant to the cities of Santos and São Vicente. The route was not new for us and, for the days of the Independence holiday (09/07), we were expecting to find a sunny weather to make incredible shots, specially from the highest places on the top of the hills. Instead, we had to deal with very very cloudy, rainy and foggy days.

Eu decidi começá-lo mostrando fotos que fiz em uma breve viagem com minha assistente às cidades de Santos e São Vicente. O destino não era nada novo para nós e, naquele feriado da do Dia da Independência, nós estávamos esperando tempo bom, com muito sol, para fazer fotos incríveis, especialmente dos lugares mais altos nos topos  dos morros.  Mas ao invés disso, tivemos que lidar com dias muito, muito nublados, chuvosos e com neblina.  

So what to do in this scenery? The answer is quite simple: Simply shoot! 😉

Então o que fazer diante deste cenário? A resposta é simples: Simplesmente fotografar! 😉

We began our journey in São Vicente, the oldest Brazilian city, going up to José Menino´s hill by car and reaching 180m high! This place usually offers visitors an awesome panoramic view of the coastline: From São Vicente (including the Porchat Island), to the entrance of the port, in the bay of Santos, it´s neighboord city.

Nós iniciamos nossa jornada em São Vicente, a mais antiga cidade do Brasil, subindo o Morro do José Menino de carro e alcançando uma altura de 180 metros! Este lugar normalmente oferece aos visitantes uma incrível vista panorâmica da costa: De São Vicente (incluindo a Ilha Porchat), até a entrada do porto, na baía de Santos, sua cidade vizinha. 

On that day, however, the weather was cold and foggy, so there wasn´t much to see there. Even that, it could be interesting to a photographer, specially one who appreciates creating different compositions with angle, color and light, to explore it.

Naquele dia, entretanto, o tempo era frio e nebuloso, não havendo muito para se ver, lá. Ainda assim, poderia ser interessante para um fotógrafo, especialmente um que apreciasse criar composições diferentes,  com ângulo, luz e cor, explorar.

So below is one of the first shots I made up there.

Abaixo segue um dos primeiros cliques que eu fiz lá em cima. 

Following another shot, then looking to the right portion of the wide landscape, I found the Porchat Island standing almost alone in the sea, as waiting for some ship to rise from the mist and moor at it´s rocks.

Prosseguindo para outro clique, agora olhando para o lado direito da imensa paisagem à frente, encontrei a Ilha Porchat praticamente sozinha no mar, como que esperando por algum navio surgir da névoa e atracar em suas rochas.

So, after a short while, and in a sort of unexpected luck, I was surprised by an in tune flock of birds, that simply started to “dance” in the sky, filling the whole frame and giving balance to the composition. I couldn´t wait any longer to capture that scene, so here´s the result.

Então, após certo momento, e no que foi um inesperado golpe de sorte, fui surpreendido por um bando de pássaros muito bem sintonizados, que começaram a “dançar” no céu, preenchendo todo o quadro e dando equilíbrio à composição. eu não poderia mais esperar para registrar tal cena. E aqui está o resultado.

Now, a series of images were captured in a different kind of composition: Using the portrait format instead of the landscape one, as is usual in this kind of photography. But the reason to do so, besides been something I like to do, is that it created a kind of abstraction, helped by the foggy atmosphere present on the landscape evolving everything in it: From a series of modern buildings in the central area of Santos…

Em seguida, uma série de imagens foram realizadas num tipo diferente de composição: Usando o formato retrato ao invés de paisagem, como seria comum neste tipo de fotografia. Mas a razão para tal, além de ser algo de que eu goste, é que ele favoreceu a criação de uma fotografia quase abstrata, auxiliada também pela névoa presente na paisagem e que envolvia a tudo: De uma série de edifícios modernos no centro de Santos…

… to the traces of waves that draws an harmonic movement downward the sand, along with few corageous people facing the cold wind in the José Menino´s beach in São Vicente…

… aos traços das ondas que desenhavam um movimento harmonioso na areia, pontuados por algumas poucas e corajosas pessoas que encaravam o vento gelado na praia de José Menino em São Vicente…

… till the coastline, scaping from the viewer´s eyes, then disappearing in the misty horizon.

… até a costa, que escapava do olhar e desaparecia no horizonte enevoado.
